Don’t miss Uluru, nor Ningaloo. Kakadu is also unmissable! Do take a look at my posts on my blog on Kakadu – if you go, do a day-trip into Arnhem Land with Sab Lord of Lord’s Safaris (must be booked in advance) and his aboriginal guide Thompson, a local artist – you’ll love it. Sab grew up with the traditional owners and is a real character.

You don’t need to do a tour at Kakadu, but a lot of travellers like to – if you do, Connections 3-day small group tours are brilliant, staying in safari tents by a billabong, with a guide called Jerry, one of the most knowledgeable guides we’ve ever had. Full stop. We’re not into tours ourselves but we need to check them out for the books we write, and these were both brilliant. You won’t need to do one at Kakadu – you can drive yourself and then do short tours – the short cruise on Yellow Waters is stunning – phenomenal birdlife.

The Anangu tours at Uluru are disappointing though, so give them a miss and instead spend some time at the Cultural Centre beforehand.

When you get to Monkey Mia, however, you MUST do a bushwalk or two with indigenous guide “Capes”, Darren Capewell – unbelievable guy and a great experience. If you email me, I’ll give you his email address so you can get in touch.
